Salome Jug

On the northern banks of Lake Roosevelt is the mouth of the Salome Creek drainage. Cascading down from the Sierra Ancha mountain range, Salome Creek Canyon spans over 22 miles of desert canyon wilderness. The lower 5 mile stretch is a popular hike that quickly turns into an exploration of swirling slick rock, challenging down climbs and an exposed rappel through a flowing water chute.

This is a good beginner canyon to enjoy, and can be done without a wetsuit late spring – summer. In the monsoon months, beware! This is a major confluence for several large mountain ranges and the water conditions change frequently! Wetsuits in the colder months are a necessity as well as approach shoes or canyoneering shoes and you will need enough rope to complete a 45 foot rappel.

Pictured right is the water chute where you rappel into the bowels of the “Jug” – a watery body of water over 15 feet deep that you encounter after a 40 foot rappel station. A hand line has been rigged and can be clipped into with a carabiner, since the rock in this area is slick. A floating device may come in handy as  to keep you out of the algae and debris, plus we use Dry Bags from Sea-to-Summit with good success.  There are a number of manufacturers such as Millet and 5.10 that produce canyoneering-specific goods.
